ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Dr. Annie-Claude Labbé

Dr. Labbé completed her doctorate in medicine at the University of Sherbrooke in 1993 and obtained her specialist diploma in infectious diseases and medical microbiology at the University of Montreal in 1999. She pursued postdoctoral research training at the University of Toronto (molecular biology: antimalarial resistance genes of Plasmodium falciparum), then at Université Laval (epidemiology of sexually transmitted infections among sex workers in Benin and Ghana). Since 2002, she has been a microbiologist-infectiologist at Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont. She is a member of the Advisory Committee on STBBIs of the National Institute of Public Health of Canada (INSPQ) and of the National Advisory Committee on Sexually Transmitted and Blood-Borne Infections of the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). She has also participated in various ad hoc committees of the National Institute of Excellence in Health and Social Services (INESSS) for the development of Optimal Use Guides or national protocols.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Irene Martin
Head, Streptococcus and STI Unit @National Microbiology Laboratory, Public Health Agency of Canada
As Head of the Streptococcus and STI Unit, Irene provides laboratory reference and surveillance services including bacteriological and molecular characterizations for Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Mycoplasma genitalium, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Streptococcus agalactiae. Research and development includes: a Streptococcus and Gonococcus genomics program; development of novel molecular diagnostic assays to detect antimicrobial resistance in clinical specimens; characterizing antimicrobial resistance mechanisms and monitoring emerging resistances.
ABOUT THE MODERATOR: Dr. Marc Steben
Dr. Steben is a Family physician, President of IUSTI Canada and President-elect of the International Society for STD Research. As a family physician, Marc concentrates his clinical interest on sexual health, mainly chronic genital diseases. Research, development and publications field include therapeutic approaches to chronic genital pain, prevention and treatment of genital herpes and development of HPV prophylactic vaccine.
