  • Editor-in-chief (EIC) of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) Journal

The American Sexually Transmitted Diseases Associations (ASTDA) seeks applications for the position of Editor-in-chief (EIC) of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD). ASTDA seeks a person who is committed to the field of STIs and has a vision for expanding the reach and impact of the journal. The EIC is responsible for overseeing the journal’s operations and scientific content. This includes:

    - Reviewing all manuscript submissions for suitability for publication in STD

    - Making initial decisions regarding desk rejection or sending manuscripts out for review

    - Assigning manuscripts to associate editors (AEs) and, upon receipt of their recommendations, making final decisions regarding manuscript disposition

    - Making decisions about invited commentaries, editorials, and reviews

    - Overseeing supplemental journal content, such as essays for a special issue (e.g., the 50th anniversary issue in 2025), and working with AEs responsible for other special sections (e.g., “The Real World of STD Prevention”, “From the ASTDA”)

    - Considering new journal sections or content-related activities

    - Choosing the AEs (which may entail retaining current AEs and/or identifying new ones)

    - Managing the editorial board, which involves reviewing editorial board member performance and periodically replacing existing members with new members

    - Supervising the managing editor to ensure smooth administrative operations, which typically requires weekly or biweekly meetings

    - Working with the publisher, Wolters-Kluwer, to address issues related to the journal’s publication

    - Convening an annual editorial board meeting (if possible, in person at an STD-related conference)

    - Convening additional editorial board meetings or meetings with AEs, as needed

    - Providing updates for the ASTDA Publications Committee

The position of EIC is renumerated at approximately 10% of an academic salary. This support is negotiable. The EIC also receives support for conference travel each year.

The start date is flexible but would ideally be before July 1, 2026. The current EIC (Bill Miller) will remain as “EIC-Emeritus” and will be available to ensure a smooth transition of journal operations.

To apply, please submit your curriculum vitae and a brief statement (less than 500 words) of your interest in the position and vision for the journal. Selected candidates will be interviewed. In addition, prior to or after completing the interview, the candidates may meet with Dr. Miller; or alternatively, they may email questions to him (bill_miller@unc.edu)

Please submit application materials by email to Julie Dombrowski, President ASTDA (jdombrow@uw.edu) and Preeti Pathela, President-elect ASTDA and Chair, Publications Committee (ppathela@health.nyc.gov).

The position will remain open until filled with priority given to applicants who apply before 11:59 pm PST on Sunday, March 1.
