From our colleagues at ASTDA:

We are delighted to announce that Dr. Barbara (Bobbie) Van Der Pol, PhD, MPH will be the next Editor-in-Chief of Sexually Transmitted Diseases, the flagship journal of ASTDA. Please join us in congratulating her!

Dr. Van Der Pol is a Professor of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) with an Endowed Professorship in Sexual Health Research and the Director of the UAB STD Diagnostics Laboratory. She has been in the field of biology, epidemiology, and diagnostics of STIs for more than 40 years. Her distinguishing research focuses on the development and evaluation of new diagnostic tools, healthcare utilization behaviors, and implementation research related to adoption of highly sensitive point of care testing in clinical and non-traditional settings.

Dr. Van Der Pol is a Past President of ASTDA, and she currently serves on the Executive Committee for the International Union Against STI and as Past-President of the International Society for STD Research. For many years, Bobbie has been an Associate Editor for both Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Sexually Transmitted Infections. Bobbie’s energy and dedication for expanding access to tools for improving sexual health are widely recognized, and she is regarded as an exceptional mentor and sponsor of early career professionals in the STI field. ASTDA was honored to celebrate her accomplishments with the Distinguished Career Award last year.

On behalf of the ASTDA Board and the STD Editorial Board, we thank Bobbie for taking on this critical role in our field. We are thankful for her leadership and excited about her vision for the journal!

We are deeply thankful to Dr. Bill Miller for his leadership of the STD journal and look forward to honoring his contributions in the next few months prior to his transition out of the role.
